EVERYTHING IS A REMIX

Shepard Fairey

Frank Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer activist and illustrator. He became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential elections for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster. He took the photograph on the left without permission and remixed it. However, the remixed version is completely different from the photograph. This is a good example of copyright and copyleft.

Remixing is the combining or editing existing materials to produce new products. It includes simple changes such as adding effects, changing the music or simply just adding text. With this there has been many issues of copyright and questions on who the owner of the remix is.

Collages are widely used in the design world and are usually made from existing materials. However the original images are hardly noticeable, they have been manipulated to create something totally different. There is no recognition of the original art.
