Many people choose to pay for software’s rather than using open sourced software’s, but because you’ve paid for it, does that make it yours? You are still limited in what you can do with the paid software as you can’t alter it also you have to follow the rules of the creator. Whereas with open sourced software’s, there are no restrictions, you are able to work as you wish too.

Dave Crossland a consulter for the Google Web Fonts project told us a little bit about what Google Fonts is and how it works. It was created for anyone to use freely as Google themselves have already paid for the fonts therefore you don’t have to follow any copyright laws as it has already been done for you. With these fonts you are also able to edit them and call it your own. This is what makes open source software a great tool for young designers.

I really enjoyed this task and will be looking to explore more into creating fonts and using open source software's in the future.

Here are my sketches of the letters 'n','o' and 'a'. I started off by creating a fill of the letters, as recommended by Dave Crossland. Once i was happy with the shape and form i then went onto the outline and the solid fill.

I thought that the first fill was quite thin so when doing the outline i only used the fill as a guide and made the outline thicker.
I then went onto fontforge and began to create my letters. I found it creating the letter 'o' difficult as i couldn't get the roundess that i wanted. To get this perfect i will need to look more into how to create typefaces so i can get the alignment and proportion right.
